One day you were walking past a pet grooming store, and your eyes got locked on the sight of an adorable Beagle puppy, there and then you decided that you want this dog. Now, you decided that you are ready to be a dog parent, and want to know the price of this pooch.

History of Beagle

Before jumping into the price list of this cute dog, let’s look at how this pooch came to be, and unfortunately, not much is known about its origins. There have been countless speculation for centuries on the origins of this ancient breed, but to this day, none has been accepted. It is said that this breed is around from at least 55 B.C.

Beagle old history

By skipping a couple of centuries, we come to the 1500s where we are certain that these hounds were a big part of hunting in England. During this time, each English hunter had a pack of Beagles to hunt hares, and their appeal, largely was because of their compact size. These were referred to as Foot hounds, as you went hunting on foot with a pack of Beagles, and for the people who couldn’t afford a horse for hunting and expenses of a stable, these were the ideal dogs. Slowly, when English people started migrating to other parts of the world, these pooches tagged along, and that is how they came to India.

I would highly suggest that you should visit a shelter first because they usually have affectionate dogs abandoned by people. You can even find a Beagle at such places. However, if you are certain that you must buy a puppy, then it is best if you visit a reputed and ethical breeder. As for the price, it will depend on the purpose you need this pooch for. If you are planning on buying this dog as a companion, then you are looking anywhere from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 30,000, but if you specifically need this hound for dog shows, well, then you can expect to easily spend more than Rs. 40,000.

Another way to get these dogs is to look online. People usually post advertisements for adoptions, as they are unable to take care of their dog or they might be leaving the country, and simply cannot take their dog with them.

Temperament and Characteristics of Beagle

While it is amazing to have a dog as your companion, you must understand their personality as well. Although each dog is unique and behaves differently, some traits are fairly common in a certain breed, and these are common in Beagles.

Digging beagle

These are curious dogs, and they love digging. What exactly are they looking for is beyond me, but you can be absolute that they will dig open your backyard. Expert believe this is because of their hunting instincts, as they were used to track down hares that live in underground burrows, so naturally, Beagles dig. Also, it is a way for them to get rid of their boredom.

High Energy Level

Surely, these are compact hounds, however, they are anything but low on energy. They pack high energy, and if you cannot exhaust them, they will become destructive to your furniture. You will be surprised to know that they require almost the same amount of exercise as a Labrador Retriever, which is significantly larger.

Great with Kids

Beagles are known to be good with children, they are affectionate dogs, and simply love being around each member of the family, no matter their age. If your child happens to be an energetic toddler, even better, as this pooch will match with their energy level. However, it is not recommended to leave young kids with Beagles unsupervised.

Fun with Pets

Throughout the history of Beagles, they have never lived alone, they were always a part of a pack, and for this reason, if you happen to have other pets in your household, these will befriend them easily, even if that pet happens to be a cat. Just make sure you socialize them properly.

They are Loud

Being a hunting dog, it is no surprise that these are loud dogs. Despite their size, their bark packs a kick, which is great to scare away intruders. However, it can also become annoying sometimes, if you are not used to this breed. They occasionally love to howl as well.

The Team Player

It doesn’t matter if you are having a small house party, play session for your child, or simply having your relatives over, this loving pooch wants to be a part of all of them. By any chance, if you have people running around and playing, then you can expect this hound to be doing the same.

The appearance of Beagle

Beagles are cute little dogs and can be differentiated from any other breed easily. While we are familiar with the smaller version, there is also a larger Beagle as well.

Flappy Ears

Perhaps the most notable characteristic of this hunting pup is its downed flappy ears. While they appear decent-sized on an adult, puppy Beagles look like their ears are too big for them, and this gives them an adorable look.

Coat and Colors

Beagles have a short coat that is great for Indian weather. They usually are tan-colored with black or brown markings with white underbelly fur. These are also seen with brownish-yellow fur as well.

As you already know there are two types of Beagles. The smaller ones only weigh at most 20 pounds and stay below 13 inches. While the larger Beagles, weigh anywhere from 25 to 30 pounds, with a height of 15 inches. Still, not big by any means.

Diet and Nutrition

It is always best to visit a veterinarian when understanding the specific dietary needs of your dog. You can expect the feeding cost of this puppy to be anywhere from Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 8,000 a month in Delhi.

  • Beagles can have digestive issues when fed irregularly. Therefore, it is best to feed them at the same time each day.
  • Provide them with frequent smaller meals throughout the day, instead of large meals.
  • Avoid high-fat content food in their diet as they are prone to obesity.

Like any other dog, these have specific requirements as well.

Beagles are highly energetic dogs that require plenty of exercise throughout the day. It is recommended that you must engage them in playful activities or take them on walks for at least 2 hours a day. It becomes even more crucial when you realize they can start destroying your furniture if not exhausted.

Training from their puppyhood is recommended. While these are not aggressive dogs, they can behave like a rebel when untrained, also they will bark quite a bit. Socialize them early on with family, and other pets, along with training them to ensure that they grow into a well-behaved pooch. Just be patient with these pooches as they easily get distracted.

Grooming requirements are fairly low for Beagles. You only need to brush them once a week. However, if you want professionals to take care of your dog, then in Delhi, a good grooming month will set you back Rs. 5,000.

Health Concerns

Overall, Beagles are a healthy breed, but they still suffer from some health issues.

Cruciate Ligament Disease

Approximately 70% of Beagles tend to suffer from this condition. In this, the ligaments that stabilize the knee joint slowly get weaker, and worse over time. It requires surgery to fix the stability issues once they encounter this disease.

Back, Neck, and Spine Issues

As these pooches grow old, they tend to develop pain in their neck, spine, and back. Sometimes, they can often suffer from Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), which occurs when the vertebrae in the spin become weak due to years of wear and tear.

Overall, this is an affectionate and energetic hound that will become a great member of your family. Furthermore, these are often recommended to first-time dog owners, as Beagles are easy to manage and don’t ask for much, and their monthly expenditure isn’t that expensive either.
