Security has become one of the major concerns in day-to-day life. So, one reason for having a security dog is the growing concern about security among people nowadays. 1. Rottweiler Dog
The Rottweiler dog breed is one of the most popular dog breeds in India which comes in a medium to large size range. Although Rottweilers are popular, they are relatively rare as pets. In history, when Romans lived in Germany, they used these dogs to feed cows and buffaloes. They also used these dogs to pull carts for farmers and butchers, which were filled with meat. But some experts who study dog breeds think this dog belongs to the type of dog called Roman Mastiffs, which used to be called Roman Molossus. The dog breed, called Rottweiler, gets its name from a small town in Germany called ‘Rottweil.’ There was a time when this breed was getting extinct because this breed was being used for pulling the heavily-loaded carts. But when railways were introduced in Germany, people’s workload decreased. Thus, the demand for Rottweiler dogs became less. Later on, the police began using this breed of dogs, and as a result, their population increased. After World War 2, there was a sudden increase in the demand for these dogs, and they were also recognized as excellent and obedient dogs. There are two categories of Rottweilers, namely German Rottweilers and American Rottweilers. These dogs have a bite force of about 328 PSI. Rottweilers are ranked as the 10th most intelligent dog breed. Therefore, considering all the points mentioned above, these dogs can be easily trained and used for security.
2. German Shepherd Dog
German Shepherd dogs are the most popular dog breeds in India and all over the world. This breed is commonly found among dog lovers. This dog breed was founded by Captain Max Emil Friedrich Von Stephanitz; he was a German cavalry officer and dog breeder. He purchased a dog named ‘Hektor Linksrhein’ from a dog show and that dog was referred to as the first German Shepherd dog. This breed is the second most registered dog breed in the United States of America with about 3.5 Million registrations. These dogs have a bite pressure of about 328 PSI. During World War 1, this dog breed gained immense popularity. When American soldiers were in combat with Germans, they discovered these dogs to be highly intelligent and capable. Impressed by their qualities, American soldiers brought them back to America. The main characteristic of this breed is their dedication to keeping their owner safe. German Shepherds come in two colour variations, black and brown, as well as white. However, white-coated German Shepherds are beautiful in appearance. They rank fourth on the list of dogs with a keen sense of smell. Rin Tin Tin, a famous male German Shepherd, starred in 27 Hollywood films. 3. Bullmastiff Dog
Bullmastiff dog is an English breed of dog of mastiff type and is of large size. English gamekeepers bred this dog breed originated in the United Kingdom in the mid-nineteenth century around the 1860s. These dogs are skilled at tracking and can easily capture and hold on to their targets because of their strength. This dog breed results from breeding an English Mastiff with an Old English Bulldog. Unfortunately, the Old English Bulldogs are no longer in existence today. The Bullmastiff inherits its large size from the English Mastiff and its courageous traits from the Old English Bulldog. In 1934, the American Kennel Club officially recognized this dog breed. Bullmastiffs can live comfortably with both their family members and on their own. Despite their large size, they rarely bark except in exceptional circumstances. They are extremely protective of their owners and family. Thus, the Bullmastiff dog breed can be used for safety and reliability.
4. Giant Schnauzer Dog
The Giant Schnauzer dog breed originated in the 17th century in Germany. This dog breed is not recommended to be kept at home around children and other pets due to their giant size, energy level, and commanding nature. These dogs should be trained and socialized from the very start if you want to keep them as pets. They come under the category of very large, powerful, and energetic dog breeds. However, these dogs are also loyal and easily trainable. These dogs would like to protect their owners first before getting friendly with any other person. Although these dogs don’t shed large amounts of hair, still they need regular grooming. Their outer coat is tough and dense; we often find them in pure black colour or salt and pepper colour. When talking about feeding these dogs, three to four cups of high-quality dog food is recommended daily while dividing it into two meals. However, their daily diet depends on their size, metabolism, and activity level. These dogs are not suitable for indoor living or apartments as they are big. They are certainly healthy dogs, but unlike other dogs, they can be subjected to certain health conditions. This is a territorial dog who is distrustful among strangers; they are super-friendly once they get to know you. Thus, this breed can be considered a courageous dog that can be used for security.
5. Doberman Pinscher Dog
The Doberman Pinscher dog is one of the finest breeds that fall under the category of protection dogs. Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann originally developed this dog breed around 1890 in Germany. These dogs are considered to be among the eight fastest dog breeds, capable of running at speeds of up to 32 miles per hour. Their hearing ability is remarkably strong, allowing them to detect sounds from a distance of 250 yards. This breed is the result of combining different breeds of dogs. During the Second World War, they gained popularity as guard dogs. The American Kennel Club ranks Doberman Pinschers as the seventeenth most popular dog breed in the United States. With their dignified appearance, these dogs often resemble aristocrats. It is common for their ears and tails to be surgically altered, although this practice has been banned in many countries because of its cruelty. Doberman Pinschers are known for their intelligence, attentiveness, and loyalty, making them excellent companions. However, they can become stubborn if not approached or trained properly. They are often referred to as “one-man dogs” because they form a strong bond with one family. Due to their trainability, they are often utilized as a reliable breed for security purposes.
6. Belgian Shepherd Dog
The Belgian Shepherd is a medium-sized sheepdog that originated in Belgium. These dogs have different levels of aggressiveness and temperament. They are often referred to as working dogs and are used for personal protection, detection, police work, and rescue. However, with the right owner, they can also make fantastic pets. The Belgian Malinois is another name for this breed and is known for being hard-working and loyal. It is important to note that the Belgian Malinois is often mistaken for the German Shepherd, even though there are many differences between the two breeds. These dogs have a graceful and strong appearance, but they require obedience training to effectively protect their owners from any potential threats.
7. Boxer Dog
A Boxer dog has a distinctive square-shaped head, a smooth forehead with only a few wrinkles, strong muscles, and dark, expressive eyes. Boxer dogs have a playful and friendly personality, although they can sometimes be stubborn. They are loyal, and affectionate, and make excellent lifelong companions. If you want a dog with a lot of personality, choosing a Boxer for your family is a great option. Boxers are smart and easy to train, which makes them stand out from other breeds. They have short hair and belong to the mastiff family. Boxers originated in Germany; these dogs are a mix of the Old English Bulldog and the German Bulldog. During World War 1, Boxers were used as guard dogs, attack dogs, messengers, and carriers, showing their suitability for security purposes.
8. Labrador Retriever
The Labrador Retriever Dogs are medium to large-sized dogs that originated in the United Kingdom. These dogs are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. We can call them a labrador or simply a lab. They are beautiful, intelligent, and noble dogs that are suitable for all family types. This dog breed basically originated in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. These dogs are meant to be tough and hardworking. The average height and weight of a male labrador retriever dog vary from 56 to 57 cm and 27 to 34 kg respectively. On the other hand, the average height and weight of a female labrador retriever dog vary from 54 to 56 cm and 25 to 32 kg respectively. These dogs are found in black, chocolate, and gold colours. One of the most notable features of a labrador retriever is its character. Due to their friendly appearance and exceptionally sociable nature, these dogs are one of the most famous dogs. However, they are easy to train and you can have a great company with them. A Labrador is friendly even with strangers but needs to be properly socialized as a puppy. This breed has a lot of energy and needs a lot of exercise. A fondness for water is one of this dog’s finest characteristics. These dogs are a great choice for those who enjoy outdoor physical activities. If they are trained correctly, a Labrador dog can definitely become a reliable security dog against an intruder. 9. American Akita Dog
The American Akita is a unique dog breed that is very alert, responsive, dignified, and courageous. This dog breed resembles the animal bear. Their willful and aloof personality makes them excellent watchdogs and powerful security dogs. This is basically a Japanese dog breed which is originated in the mountains of northern Japan. This breed has been originated in the snowy lands of Akita Prefecture, the mountainous region of Japan. The American Akita is known as the 20th-century fighting dog brought back from Japan. According to History, the Japanese and American Akita clashed as one breed until the Second World War. Their development was identical until that time. Helen Adams Keller, an American author expressed her desire for this breed in 1937. She brought this breed to America as she was given the two Akita dogs by the Japanese Government in 1938. Recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1955, the Akita dogs were first placed in the miscellaneous class. These dogs have a big-boned bodies with imposing and powerful appearances. Their head is massive but it is in balance with their massive body. The American Akiyas are double-coated; their outer coat is straight and harsh but their undercoat is slick, soft, and dense. This breed is a proud and confident breed that can be challenging, particularly for first-time owners. These dogs are very suspicious of strangers which makes them excellent watch dogs. 10. Tibetan Mastiff Dog
The Tibetan Mastiff is a large Chinese Tibetan dog breed that has been around for many centuries. They were originally developed in Tibet. These dogs are known for being guard dogs, but they can also be great family pets. Despite their big size and intimidating appearance, they are actually very gentle and loving towards their human family. The Tibetan Mastiff is one of the oldest mastiff breeds in the world, and it influenced the creation of other mastiff breeds. They were first brought to the US in the 1970s and officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2006. These dogs have a protective nature and deeply care for their family. They have been guarding people and properties for over 2000 years. Due to their background as guardians, they are independent thinkers. While they understand kindness and consistency, they will not tolerate abuse. Because of these qualities, Tibetan Mastiffs can be considered excellent security dogs.
